So It's Been A While...

Since I've been here to post. I've been a tad lazy. And busy, too, what with planning ahead for school and work and all that.

Today, I read a wonderfully complex and thought-provoking quote from one of my favorite anthropologists (and dashing adventurer), Claude Levi-Strauss: "The world began without the human race and will certainly end without it." The quote is from his most famous piece of literature, "Tristes Tropiques", and it makes me wonder what we want to leave behind for the earth to gaze upon when we are gone. Will it be the total destruction of all living things, or will it be a globe covered in fields and forests and clean air?

I want to help the world understand that if we don't start living for the future, we won't have one.

So please, next time you go to throw a bottle in the trash or buy a car, think of the future, not just the moment. If we all realize that every single person on this planet is just as important as the next, we can start to go towards one goal: helping each other.

I hope this post inspires a few people. It's good to have something to make you think; keeps you on you toes :)

Introductions

Hello, Internet!

My name is Ebie and I'm creating a blog to see what people envision for the world - and how it's possible to make those dreams come true.

One of my favorite songs is "Circles" by Thrice, and they have this great line that goes: "True progress means matching the world to the vision in our heads. We always change the vision instead." And while that is truly sad, it is also what often happens. I am here to change that.

From a young age (7, to be exact), I've wanted to do great things. I never aspired to be a lawyer or a movie star like many of my classmates; instead, I wanted to save the world. I wanted to discover new things and help improve lives, and get it all done in time for toast and hot chocolate before bedtime. How I plan on doing those things has vastly changed, but I still work by the same principles and care I did when I was young.

I have done many community service projects, both local (Trenton, New Jersey) and foreign (Thailand), and am currently getting my degree in Anthropology, with a certificate in Culture, Health, and Science. I want to be an EMT within the next 5 years and work in a few clinics as well. I am learning Arabic so I can work with the UN in the Middle East. And I want to make a huge difference in the world. I want to make community service something that everyone invests in. Not just giving $20 to Greenpeace every year (although it's a good thing to do; don't stop!), but actually investing in helping others on a global scale.

But during my journey, I want to know what YOU think will help save the world. Offer ideas, volunteer opportunities, phrases that make you think (or cry, or laugh), things that you saw today that gave you that warm, fuzzy feeling, anything, that you think is pertinent to the human cause.

Help me save the world, and I in turn will help you do the same.

Peace :)
